Oklahoma’s Bankruptcy Numbers Are Climbing Fast

Oklahoma has seen a dramatic increase in bankruptcy filings throughout 2025. During the 12 months ending June 30, 2025, Oklahoma’s three federal bankruptcy districts recorded 247 business bankruptcy filings, representing an 18% jump from the same period in 2024 and a 43% increase from 2023.

For individual filers, the trend is the same. The Northern District of Oklahoma saw bankruptcy filings rise about 17% in recent reporting periods, while the Eastern District experienced a 28% increase. These aren’t small numbers. They represent real families and businesses facing serious financial pressure.

The state recorded roughly 6,000 total bankruptcy filings across all three districts during 2023, with numbers continuing to climb through 2025. Business bankruptcies have been particularly affected, with the vast majority filing under Chapter 7 liquidation rather than attempting reorganization.

Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

Yet, even with all these increases, there are still way fewer bankruptcies in Oklahoma than in 2019. Across the country, 2023 bankruptcy filings were down more than 41% compared to 2019. Oklahoma’s been bouncing back faster than a lot of other states, but we still haven’t hit those pre-pandemic numbers.

Oklahoma’s increase has actually outpaced the national trend. While national business filings rose about 4.5% year over year, Oklahoma’s business filings jumped 18%. This difference likely reflects Oklahoma’s economy being more exposed to sectors that have struggled recently, including energy, manufacturing, and agriculture.

What’s Driving the Increase in 2025?

Several financial pressures are pushing more Oklahomans toward bankruptcy this year:

Rising costs everywhere. Inflation has increased the price of groceries, gas, housing, and insurance. Even though inflation rates have started to slow, the damage to household budgets has already been done. Many families are carrying more debt than ever just to maintain their standard of living.

Higher interest rates. Credit card interest rates and loan payments have climbed significantly. The Federal Reserve raised rates to combat inflation, which means anyone carrying debt is paying more to service it. For businesses, higher borrowing costs have squeezed already thin profit margins.

Student loan payments resumed. After a three-year pause during the pandemic, federal student loan payments restarted. The New York Federal Reserve estimated that over 9 million borrowers would face serious credit problems in early 2025. Bankruptcy attorneys across the country reported their busiest days since the Great Recession once these payments kicked back in.

Stagnant wages. While costs have risen dramatically, many workers haven’t seen corresponding pay increases. This squeeze between income and expenses has left households with little room for error. One unexpected medical bill or car repair can tip the balance.

Easy access to credit during the pandemic. Many people took on additional debt during 2020 and 2021 when credit was readily available, and relief programs helped cover expenses. Now those bills are coming due without the same support systems in place.

Bankruptcy Isn’t Always About Failure

Bankruptcy filings don’t always signal financial collapse. Many bankruptcy cases are filed strategically to protect assets, reorganize debt, or buy time to address temporary financial problems.

Chapter 7 can actually help business owners protect their other companies from creditors. Chapter 11 gives struggling businesses breathing room to reorganize and keep their doors open. For individuals, filing stops the harassment from debt collectors and gives you space to start fresh.

The rising numbers in Oklahoma show that more people and businesses are taking proactive steps to address financial distress rather than ignoring their problems until options run out.

What This Means for You

If you’re dealing with overwhelming debt, the data shows you’re facing the same pressures as thousands of other Oklahomans. Credit card debt is climbing, collection calls are increasing, and making minimum payments feels impossible.

Bankruptcy exists to give people and businesses a fresh start when debt becomes unmanageable. Despite the recent increases, Oklahoma bankruptcy filings remain far below historical highs. The system isn’t overwhelmed, and qualified bankruptcy attorneys at our law firm can help you understand your options.

The most important thing is to act before your situation worsens. Many people wait until they’ve drained retirement accounts, missed multiple mortgage payments, or faced lawsuits before seeking help. Getting advice early gives you more options and better outcomes.
